Understanding My Journey
As a single mother of two children, my journey began many years ago when my son was diagnosed with autism at the age of five. This diagnosis changed my life and set me on a path full of challenges and triumphs. While advocating for my son, I discovered that I was facing my own challenges — as a single parent and as an individual recently diagnosed with AUDHD (Autism and ADHD). This moment of revelation opened my eyes to misconceptions about autism that I had held for years.
Learning and Self-Advocacy
Throughout the last decade, I have learned vital lessons about autism, myself, and the practice of self-advocacy. My educational journey culminated in graduating college and earning a master’s degree in data science, proving that despite the challenges, determination can lead to success. One significant realization has been understanding the concept of masking — the act of hiding one’s real self to conform to societal expectations. This understanding has fostered a stronger self-awareness and acceptance.
Future Aspirations
Armed with knowledge and experience, I am passionate about advocating for others who are navigating similar paths. My goal is to write a book sharing our story, crafting a narrative that not only educates but also empowers others. Additionally, I dream of creating a consulting business to support families and individuals facing the challenges of autism. Through advocacy, I aim to break down misconceptions and promote understanding within communities.
